Ceiling Fans - During Northwest Florida's long cooling season, fans can very effectively conserve energy while maintaining or improving comfort. With fans operating in conditioned rooms, studies have shown the occupants can maintain their comfort at a 2°F higher temperature. Realizing that there is a 10% energy saving for each °F, fans can be very effective. Be sure to shut off fans in unoccupied rooms. During the heating season, fans can be reversed to circulate warmer air near the ceiling into the occupied space.

Energy Renovation Process

1. Energy Checkup (Audit) - In Northwest Florida, Gulf Power will conduct a complimentary Energy Checkup (Audit). As part of the process, they will check all of the home's energy systems and note those systems that aren't performing up to par.

2. Energy Assessment - Upon request, Evergreen Energy Initiative (a nonprofit entity) will accompany Gulf Power on the audit and make other observations. Those observations and the energy audit findings will be analyzed and evaluated to prepare a written report. This Energy Assessment will review and discuss each opportunity to improve the home's energy efficiency, recommend how to accomplish each one, and estimate the cost and energy savings resulting from each improvement. Click on the following PDF link to see the Energy Assessment on the Demonstration Home.

3.  Meeting with Owners - Evergreen will submit the written report to the homeowners and schedule a meeting to accomplish the following:

  • Review and explain the recommendations in the Energy Assessment.

  • Discuss the estimated cost and energy savings for each renovation item.

  • Develop an initial implementation plan.

Note: The homeowners will determine an implementation plan they are comfortable with. This plan will often be subject to available financing that Evergreen will assist with arranging. Homeowners often decide to start implementation with no-cost or low-cost, high-return items. After gaining experience, more costly items can be implemented.

4. Tracking and Reporting - After implementation starts, Evergreen will track the homeowners' monthly power bills and compare them to the previous year's expense. The savings will be periodically reported along with the cost of the renovation to determine the return on investment. With this information, the homeowners can better guide their energy renovation. Renovation Results

Approximately ten months after the renovation was essentially complete, the homeowner has achieved the following results:

  • Power bills reduced by $1,313 from $2,184 to $871

  • A reduction of 60.1%

  • Renovation replacement cost of approximately $12,500

  • Return on investment of 12.6% per year

Note: The above data has been adjusted by temperature differences (degree days) from last year to this year.

Make your older home more energy efficient and comfortable.
